Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs)

Q1: What is a passport?
A passport is a travel document issued by a country's government to its citizens, certifying the holder's identity and nationality for the purpose of international travel.
Q2: What is the validity of a passport?
For adults (18 years and above), a passport is generally valid for 10 years. For minors (below 18 years), it is valid for 5 years or until they attain the age of 18, whichever is earlier.
Q3: How long does it take to get a passport?
Under normal processing, it typically takes 15-30 days after successful application and police verification. For Tatkaal applications, it can be much faster, usually 1-7 days.
Q4: What is ECR and Non-ECR status?
ECR stands for Emigration Check Required. Indian citizens who have not passed 10th standard or do not have a higher educational qualification are generally marked ECR. Non-ECR status means Emigration Check Not Required, which is for those who are educationally qualified or meet certain criteria. ECR passports require an emigration clearance from the Protector of Emigrants (POE) for certain types of employment abroad.
